    Course facilitator: Seb Reaburn

I come to my roles as founder at Anther Gin and Master Distiller with Top Shelf from a long history in the alcohol industry, making cocktails, serving spirits, and managing brands. In every role I have been recognised with national and international awards, including Champion Spirit Trophies, Bartender of the Year, World’s Best Cocktail Menu, Australian Whisky Producer of the Year, Australian Vodka Producer of the Year and Worlds best Vodka Producer. I have been a part of the Australian liquor industry for over two decades and in that time I have had the pleasure of operating and owning some of the most awarded bars in Australia (1806 and Heartbreaker). I‘ve enjoyed being part of building high growth independent brands including 42 Below, 666 Vodka, Anther Gin with Dervilla McGowan and now Ned, Grainshaker and Act of Treason Agave with the Top Shelf portfolio. As partner in Anther Spirits with Dervilla McGowan, we have built a dedicated distillery and cellar door in Geelong Australia. I have had the privilege over my career to design, build and commission several distilleries, working closely with safety and design consultants, to create safe workplaces that produce award winning spirits.

    _______________

Affinity Labs recently commissioned a benchmarking study, focused on classic London Dry style gin products. This included iconic South Australian products alongside a selection of inter-state products and market leading global gin brands.

The aim of this study was to generate objective chemical data and aroma/flavour profile information that allows producers to understand stylistic differences and key compounds that influence consumer perception and enjoyment.

The market leading gin products (Tanqueray, Hendrick’s, Gordon’s and Bombay Sapphire) showed dominant coriander and pepper characters (as well as juniper, of course), while some of the SA gins were characterised by elevated orange, cardamom, confection and floral characters. Some of these also showed relatively high (but still safe) concentrations of fusel alcohols, imparting pungency to the spirit, as well as high levels of terpenes. Some of the gins also displayed noticeable fruity characters, due to elevated levels of some ester compounds.

Neil Scrimgeour, Affinity Labs, will share the research data and the tools you can utilise to craft and define unique products and provide a real point of difference in a crowded marketplace.
