Looking Back: A Brief History of the Forgotten Eras of Australian Distilling

In this keynote session, spirits writer and author Luke McCarthy will explore the forgotten former eras of Australian distilling. Australia has a rich and diverse history of spirits making stretching back 200 years, and Luke will unearth the development of the industry in the mid-1800s and show how Australia rose to become a distilling powerhouse in a complex global market. Luke will touch on the pioneering regulations that drove the industry forward and examine the mergers, acquisitions and government interventions that irrevocably changed Australian spirits production in the 20th century. The session will empower distillers with a deeper understanding of the traditions and legacies that have shaped the progress of the modern Australian spirits industry.
